How to blow dry or straighten beards without causing damage.
What type of hair straightener should I use?
Preferably one designed for beard use - you will want to find one that operates at around 385 degrees Fahrenheit (185 degrees Celsius) or below. If the straightener runs to hot, you might need to use it less often, but having your beard spring back into its natural shape after a shower is actually a good thing - it’s a sign your hair is still healthy and undamaged.
Don’t waste your time and money on paying extra for Ion/Ionic devices. All the research we have see into these type of artificial “ionic solutions”, it’s left everyone disappointed. It’s just a marketing ploy, go outside and experience nature instead.
Avoid chemical based beard relaxers. Yes, they work. but is the long term damage to your hair fibers worth it? We think it’s not.
What kind of blow drier should I used?
Any kind really, just use it on the low setting. Ideally this should be around 47℃/117°
Personally, I just use the wife’s GHD. A good life hack would be to gift your partner a fancy one, then use it when they are not looking. Men are allowed to look sexy too. ;)
5 steps to straighten and dry beards without damage
Start with washing your beard with beard shampoo and conditioner, pat dry your face with a towel, but leave it a little damp.
We recommend adding a few drops of beard oil on your facial hair and thoroughly work it in to protect the surface of your hair.
Put the hair dryer on the lowest setting, ensure you keep it 6” / 15cm away from your beard and start moving the dryer around in even motions. Same tip for beard straighteners - stick to low settings and avoid contact with one part of your beard for more than a second, which will damage your hair.
As you dry/straighten, use a beard comb to brush out any unruly tangles. Begin from under the chin, comb up and out while pointing the dryer at your facial hair. Remember to continue to keep your device moving to avoid overheating your beard. As a side note; when there’s heat involved, there can be fire/burn risk, so don’t forget to switch the device off, unplug from the wall and store safely when cool to protect your home and family. Hair straighteners are one of the major causes of house fires!
Once dried, feel free to add in some beard balm or your styling product of choice and brush through again to shape as desired. It’s a good idea to keep your beard hydrated and healthy after heating it, so use one specifically designed to produce a moisturizing effect.
