Our Top 10 Beard Oils Of 2020
We spent weeks researching and months blind testing over a dozen oil blends with a panel of bearded gentlemen to determine the best beard oil for the year.
We found ranger to perform well, however the price difference for that performance became hard to justify.
Our criteria was a simple one this year; we avoided products with siloxane and dimethicone, which prevented the oil soaking into the beard. We wanted our beard oils to have a great scent and help maintain a healthy beard with (mostly) natural, premium ingredients at an affordable price range.
The contenders:
Mountaineer Brand - 4.2/5, Price: $
The Gentlemen’s Beard - 4.1/5, Price: $$$$$
Honest Amish - 3.5/5, Price: $
Seven Potions Beard and Body Oil - 3.9/5, Price: $$$
Cremo - 3.9/5, Price: $$$
V76 by Vaughn - 3.9/5, Price: $$$
Ranger - 4.2/5, Price: $$$$
Beardbrand - 4.0/5, Price: $$$$
Grave Before Shave - 4.1/5, Price: $$$
King C Gillette Beard oil - 4.0/5. Price: $$
Beard oil seems simple however you need to look deeper than just the ingredients list. You could have two different blends of the same base ingredients and get different performance, depending on the ratio. Some beard brands use premium ingredients, but pad out the formula with cheaper oils, giving the illusion of quality.
That said, most beard oils out there will do a good job. You could use vegetable cooking oil (avocado oil would be the way to go here) if desperate. There’s really just a few key factors our judging panel looked at when evaluating the ten oils:
Absorption: Does the hair feel greasy shortly after oiling?
Control: Does the oil help keep unruly beard hair manageable?
Scent: Does this fragrance scream you? Are the top notes delightful, but the overall smell still delight an hour into wear?
Skin condition: Does the oil help itch and flakes and skin health. Conversely, does it cause breakouts or other problems?
Softness: How much softer does the hair feel when it’s moisturized?
